British Airways is launching a new nonstop flight from London (LHR) to San Jose, California (SJC) providing Silicon Valley’s only nonstop flight to Europe. The route is set to begin on May 4th, 2016 and will be run daily on a brand new 787-9 Dreamliner.
The flight schedule is as follows:
LHR- SJC Departs 3:15PM Arrives 6:05 PM
SJC – LHR Departs 8:00 PM Arrives 2:05 PM +1
This route no doubt has come to fruition thanks in part to British Airways successful flight from London (LHR) to Austin (AUS) that was launched recently. Both Austin and San Jose are global tech centers with growing population that can fill planes. However, one thing to be wary of is that San Jose (SJC) competes for passengers with both the San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK) airports just north. In fact British Airways already serves San Francisco (SFO) with a massive Airbus A380. Will this new route cannibalize their current route? Or will it stimulate new demand?
A possible scenario is that British Airways could down gauge the San Francisco flight to make sure that the markets are more balanced. Personally I think this new route will be successful on it’s own with Apple, Google, and many other companies nearby. Hopefully British Airways announces more new routes in the coming year.
