Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red Retention Offer

Barlcay AAdvantage Aviator Red Card

Credit Card Retention Offer

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter in the mail from Barclays stating that my annual fee was coming due on my Addvantage Aviator Red card. Well first off, this is the first time that I can recall where I received a letter notifying me of the fee and it also stated that I should call in before the end of August. Of course I threw it away already but the language was vague and sounded like they wanted me to call anyway which I was already planning on doing in order to get a retention offer.

To keep track of my annual fees on my credit cards I simply put a calendar entry in my Google account with reminder set for every year from the time I applied. This way I never miss an opportunity to get a retention offer or I can cancel the card if I don’t receive anything.

Anyway it was time for my trusty Aviator card’s turn to try an get a retention offer. This card for me has been amazing for targeted promotions, recently I received a 15,000 mile for only $1500 in spending over 3 months. I am currently in the middle of the promo so even if I didn’t get a retention offer I would still keep the card for the 15,000 bonus miles.

Anyway my call went well, I simply called the number on the back of the card and said that “I noticed my annual fee just came due and I was wondering if there was anyway to waive the fee”. This led to a transfer to a specialist where I repeated the same line. She said no problem, but somehow misheard me and said they could lower the variable interest rate by 4%. Well that is great, but I don’t ever carry a balance (good to know just in case!). After fixing the miscommunication issue she said that the fee would be waived on my next statement and that there is another targeted promo… This promotion gives 2x miles on gas, groceries, and utilities for the next 90 days with a maximum of 8000 miles. She asked if I wanted to signup and I said of course!

In summary these are the current bonus mile offerings / retention offers on my AAdvantage Aviator Red card

  • Annual Fee waived – Retention Offer
  • 2x Points Gas, Groceries, Utilities – Retention Offer, on spending over the next 90 days,  Max 8000 points
  • 15,000 bonus miles – Targeted, for $1500 spending in 3 months
  • 10,000 annual miles for paying the annual fee – already posted

So I will receive 25,000 miles, pay no annual fee, receive extra miles on some categories, plus my normal spending all within the next 90 days. 25,000 miles is good enough for a American Domestic Economy SAAverAward…. Barclays has been absolutely amazing with their promotions and retention offers!
